For our upcoming exhibition SALON, we have delved into the history of The Art Bypass Gallery, which is now located in a beautifully converted Victorian shop. Our research discovered that one of its first incarnations in the late 19th/early 20th century was a hairdressing salon.
We’ve asked artists to respond to the idea of the salon in all it’s forms, from the formation of the art salon in 1725 in the Louvre, to the ‘Salon des Refusés’ which took the then-outsider Impressionist artists to the public. We love honouring our mission of remaining an organisation giving opportunity to as many artists of all types as possible and in this cozy space a busy salon-style hang in the spirit of this inclusive historical exhibition makes for a busy and fun arty party!
You can expect to see a variety of takes on ‘the Salon’. We have explorations of the beauty industry from artists Bettina Erland and Lito Apostolakou, consideration of hair from intersectional, feminist perspectives from Jasmine DeSilva and Sharon James, looks at consumerism and capitalism as we approach the Christmas season from Romana Ashraf, and the tradition of the art salon and salon-style hang and its origins in art curation in the Louvre from Leena McCall and Emma Davis.
So why not join us on the 28th November 2024 for our opening arty party for a Sweet Art signature cocktail along with some other goodies and surprises. It’s always fun at a Sweet ‘Art party!
