Sweet ‘Art is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to the promotion of upcoming and established artists through exciting art events with a difference. For our next exhibition at our gallery the The Art Bypass Gallery, we will be presenting the first solo exhibition of talented artist Emma Black who is the winner of our annual award.

 

In honor of Sweet ‘Arts overarching mission and values we hold an open entry award for any artist exploring any medium, theme or concept in their art practice. Emma is a London-based artist who works with sculpture and installation to explore the complexities of human experience from non-normative perspectives. Through fragmented forms, they investigate feelings of otherness and the tension between what is visible and what remains unseen, often using their own body to explore themes of embodiment, gender, disability, and illness. The panel have chosen Emma’s work for both its artistic merit, fullness of exploration of their chosen media of ceramics, moulding, casting, and found objects, and primarily their ability to site their artwork within wider contexts and cohesive narratives.

 

Sweet ‘Art have selected and curated a current body of Emma work that explores and attempts to reclaim histories of marginalization and otherness; with themes drawn from women’s and LGBTQ+ history, queer bodies and neurodiversity. Emma’s references range from the Suffragettes, Greek mythology, poulaine shoes (and why the priests hated them), and the socialist raised fist.
